What surf lesson is right for me?
SurfABLE Scotland offers a fully inclusive range of surf sessions suitable for all. If you’re still unsure which session is right, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help with this.
✓ Adaptive Surfing (5+ years)
This session is designed for individuals with physical and/or cognitive impairments who may require one-to-one support and/or adaptations to equipment and surfing techniques. Adaptations may include the use of larger surfboards, prone surfboards, tandem surfing, and other tailored approaches to ensure accessibility. Ratio: 4 surfers to 1 instructor, with one-to-one support available where needed. Support can be provided by family members, carers, or SurfABLE Scotland volunteers, subject to availability. These sessions are open to participants aged 5 and over.
✓ Seated/Tandem Surfing (5+ years)
Reserved for surfers with high assistance needs. This surf session delivers the experience of surfing in tandem with an instructor. A supportive bucket seat can be used on the board or removed for a surfer who would be comfortable in a prone or unsupported seated position. One seated tandem board requires a minimum team of 3 Staff/Volunteers when supporting a Surfer with high assistance needs. The sessions are suitable for surfers aged 5 and over.
Safety Note: All surfers must be able to follow instructions, demonstrations and participate within a group setting.
Children aged 5-7 must be accompanied by a parent or carer.
Safety Note: All surfers must be able to follow instructions, demonstrations and participate within a group setting.
Friendly and encouraging sessions focussed on having fun in the sea using a variety of surfboards and activities as an option rather than expectation for the session. Ratio: 4 surfers to 1 surf instructor (1-1 support if required, can be facilitated by family/carers or SurfABLE Scotland Volunteers, subject to availability). The sessions are suitable for surfers aged 5 and over.
✓ Paddleboarding (5+years)
Not normally an activity that is organised in advance via the SurfABLE Scotland online booking system. Instead, paddleboarding is a great optional alternative to cancelling a session if the waves are too small for surfing. Ratios will be similar to the booked surf event that Paddleboarding may swap for.
✓ Open Water Swim Coaching (16+ years)
Currently only available to adults 16+. SurfABLE Scotland offers 3 levels in open water swim coaching aimed at developing coastal water swimming skills for the growing number of sea swimmers. Maximum Ratio: 12 swimmers to 1 swim coach and assisting lifesaver.
✓ Organised Group Sessions
Privately arranged events and collaborations with community groups and charities can be arranged (weather and surf conditions depending) to suit the specific requirements of the hire. Ratios can be adjusted to suit age group, assistance needs, etc.
NB. When you book a session, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link where we require you to complete a ‘Surfer Information Form’ for each attendee. Please ensure you complete this, as it saves us time in chasing you for it.
Non completed forms may result in us cancelling your booking.
